Treaty of Utrecht
About the Treaty of Utrecht
Ended the War of the Spanish Succession. Philip V kept the Spanish throne but renounced any claim to the French throne, forever separating the two crowns. Britain gained Gibraltar, Minorca, Hudson Bay territory, Nova Scotia, and the asiento, the right to sell slaves to Spanish America. Austria got the Spanish Netherlands and Spanish Italy possessions. The treaty established Britain as a great power and began the Anglo-French global rivalry.
