Treaty of the Pyrenees
About the Treaty of the Pyrenees
Cardinal Mazarin and Luis de Haro negotiated on Pheasant Island in the Bidasoa, ending 24 years of Franco-Spanish war. France gained Artois and Roussillon, fixing the Pyrenees as the border, and a marriage contract joined Louis XIV to the Spanish infanta Maria Theresa, the renunciation clause of which later fed the War of the Spanish Succession. France replaced Spain as the dominant power.
