Treaty of Karlowitz
About the Treaty of Karlowitz
First major Ottoman territorial cession to Christian powers, most of Hungary and Transylvania to the Habsburgs, Morea to Venice, Podolia to Poland, while Russia signed only a truce and won Azov at Constantinople in 1700. The kneeling versus seated diplomatic legend, the Ottomans negotiated from defeat for the first time. Karlowitz marks the turning point, Ottoman expansion reversing into retreat, the long seventeenth to twentieth century contraction.
