About the Treaty of Shimonoseki

Ended the First Sino Japanese War, a shocking demonstration of Japan rise and China decline. China recognized Korean independence, ceded Taiwan, Penghu, and the Liaodong Peninsula, and paid a huge indemnity. The Triple Intervention, Russia, France, Germany, forced Japan to return Liaodong, which Russia then leased, seeding the Russo Japanese War. Taiwan remained Japanese until 1945. The war redrew East Asian power forever.
