Treaty of Portsmouth
About the Treaty of Portsmouth
Theodore Roosevelt mediated the end of the Russo Japanese War at Portsmouth New Hampshire, winning the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize, the first American laureate. Japan gained the South Manchuria railway lease and southern Sakhalin but won no indemnity, causing Tokyo riots. Russia recognized Japanese primacy in Korea. First modern defeat of a European power by an Asian one, it inspired anticolonial movements across Asia.
