Convention of Peking
About the Convention of Peking
After the Second Opium War and the burning of the Summer Palace, China ratified Tianjin treaties, opened more ports, legalized opium, permitted missionaries, ceded Kowloon to Britain, and Outer Manchuria, modern Primorsky Krai, Vladivostok, to Russia, the latter by supplementary convention. The losses, Hong Kong expansion till 1997, and the Pacific port Russia gained, remain reference points for Chinese and Russian claims and grievances.
