About the Oregon Treaty

Settled the Oregon boundary dispute, extending the 49th parallel border from the Rockies to the Pacific, giving Britain Vancouver Island. The slogan Fifty Four Forty or Fight had threatened war, President Polk settled for compromise. San Juan Islands were left ambiguous, causing the Pig War border standoff of 1859, resolved in 1872 when an arbitration by German Kaiser Wilhelm I awarded the islands to the United States. The treaty completed the contiguous US mainland borders except the southern ones.
