About the Adams-Onis Treaty

Secretary of State John Quincy Adams obtained Florida from Spain and fixed the border between the US and Spanish Mexico along the Sabine, Red and Arkansas rivers and then the 42nd parallel to the Pacific. The US renounced claims to Texas, Spain gave up the Pacific Northwest. Adams considered it his greatest diplomatic achievement. The border definitions shaped later American expansionism debates and the Texas question that led to war with Mexico.
