Treaty of Paris 1783
About the Treaty of Paris 1783
Ended the American Revolutionary War. Britain recognized the independence of the United States and ceded territory from the Atlantic to the Mississippi River, doubling the original thirteen colonies land claims beyond settlement. Fishing rights off Newfoundland were granted. Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and John Jay negotiated brilliantly, playing France against Britain. The treaty made the United States a nation recognized internationally and set its western boundary at the Mississippi.
