About the Treaty of Fredrikshamn

Signed in the Finnish war after the Russian occupation of Finland, it ceded Finland and the Aland islands to Alexander I, who had already convened the Porvoo Diet and taken the title Grand Duke of Finland. Finland remained an autonomous grand duchy for over a century, keeping its laws and Lutheran faith, until independence in 1917. The loss triggered a Swedish coup and a new constitution.
