Treaty of London 1839
About the Treaty of London 1839
The five powers recognized independent Belgium and guaranteed its perpetual neutrality, closing the London Conference that had detached it from the Netherlands. The scrap of paper became famous when Germany demanded passage in 1914 and Britain declared war over the guarantee. The neutral status lasted until the German invasions of 1914 and 1940.
