About the Treaty of Lausanne

Recognized the Republic of Turkey under Atatürk, replacing Sevres. Turkey secured essentially its current borders, straits demilitarized under international commission, and a companion convention set the Greek Turkish population exchange, about 1.2 million Orthodox Christians from Turkey and some 400,000 Muslims from Greece, precedent for ethnic cleansing as international policy. The treaty remains Turkeys founding diplomatic document and is invoked in Aegean and Cyprus disputes.
