About the Treaty of Kanagawa
Commodore Matthew Perry gunboat diplomacy opened Japan after 220 years of sakoku isolation. The treaty opened Shimoda and Hakodate ports for American ships, established consular relations, and provided for shipwrecked sailors care. It was Japan first treaty with a Western power and triggered the collapse of the Tokugawa shogunate, leading to the Meiji Restoration and Japan rapid industrialization. Within decades, Japan became a great power itself.
