About the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty

Fifteen days after Panama independence, engineered by US warship presence, Bunau Varilla, a French engineer Panama had not even authorized fully, signed away the canal zone in perpetuity, ten mile strip, US sovereignty, for 10 million dollars. Panama got a worse deal than Colombia had offered. The 1977 Torrijos Carter treaties finally returned the zone, Carter paying for the original sin as Panama alleges, the canal handed over fully 1999.
