About the Cobden-Chevalier Treaty

Richard Cobden and Michel Chevalier negotiated the pact that dropped tariffs between the two old rivals and attached a most favoured nation clause. It triggered a wave of European commercial treaties in the 1860s, creating a first golden age of trade integration that lasted until the protectionist turn of the late 1870s. The treaty is the classic case of liberal peace through commerce.
