Treaty of Ghent
About the Treaty of Ghent
Ended the War of 1812, restoring all territory to prewar boundaries, effectively a draw. Nothing about the causes, impressment of sailors, trade restrictions, was resolved. The peace led to the Rush-Bagot Agreement of 1817 limiting warships on the Great Lakes, the start of the US Canada border the longest undefended border in the world. The Battle of New Orleans was fought after signing but before news arrived, making Andrew Jackson a hero.
