About the Triple Alliance

The alliance system built by Bismarck bound the Central Powers in a defensive pact renewed every five years. Italy joined partly to avoid isolation after taking Tunisia as a rival of France, and its clause interpreting defensive obligations let it stay neutral in 1914, then join the Entente in 1915 under the secret Treaty of London. Romania attached itself in 1883 but also switched sides in 1916.
