Peace of Augsburg
About the Peace of Augsburg
Cuius regio, eius religio, rulers choose the religion of their lands, Lutheranism legalized alongside Catholicism. The peace ended the Schmalkaldic wars but excluded Calvinists, Anabaptists, and individual conscience, storing conflict. The Calvinist exclusion and church lands secularization disputes fed the Thirty Years War. Augsburg began the slow European accommodation of permanent religious division, the state system religion settlement.
