About the Lateran Treaty

Mussolini and Cardinal Gasparri settled the Roman Question after 59 years of standoff between the Italian state and the popes. Italy recognized the sovereign Vatican City State of about 44 hectares, paid compensation for the lost Papal States, and a concordat regulated church life in Italy. The smallest state in the world gained a seat, as the Holy See, in international diplomacy.
