About the Jay Treaty

Chief Justice John Jay defused the war crisis over northwest forts, still occupied, and British impressment. Britain evacuated posts, arbitration of boundary and debts, but concessions to British shipping outraged Jeffersonians, treaty burned in effigy. Washington signed despite public storm, buying time for a weak republic, the neutrality policy until 1812. It established the executive treaty power precedent and the party divide over Britain versus France.
