Maastricht Treaty
About the Maastricht Treaty
Created the European Union, the three pillars structure, and the euro path. EU citizenship established, foreign policy and justice cooperation added, convergence criteria for monetary union set, and the ECB framework born. Danish rejection first, then acceptance with opt outs, British opt outs on social chapter and euro. The euro arrived 1999, Maastricht criteria still govern membership debates. It remains the deepest sovereignty pool in modern history.
