North Atlantic Treaty
About the North Atlantic Treaty
Created NATO, the collective defense alliance where attack on one is attack on all, Article 5. Anchored the United States in European defense for the first time, answering the Berlin Blockade and Communist coups. Greece and Turkey joined 1952, Germany 1955, prompting the Warsaw Pact. Article 5 invoked once, after 9/11. NATO survived the Cold War, enlarged eastward, and returned to prominence with Russia invasion of Ukraine.
