About the Heligoland-Zanzibar Treaty

The bargain that traded the North Sea island of Heligoland, needed by Germany for its Kiel canal defenses, for German withdrawal from Zanzibar and East African claims. Germany also gained the Caprivi strip, reaching the Zambezi. The treaty settled the last major Anglo-German colonial friction before 1914 and fixed spheres that mapped onto later colonies.
